Water Balance and Vase Life of cut Iris flowers as Influenced by Cycloheximide and some Plant Growth Regulators

H. Harkema
Abstract
The effects of cycloheximide (CHX) and some hormones on water balance and vase life of cut iris ¢¥Blue Magic¢¥ were studied. When cut iris flowers were treated with CHX, the water balance was changed markedly in the pattern of water absorption and transpiration. CHX decreased water uptake and transpiration of iris flower rapidly until the 4th day in vase, then increased gradually to the 6th day, whereas control (deionized water) increased the water uptake until the 3rd day. Iris flowers lasted for eleven days in the CHX solution. It is concluded that the prolonged vase life of iris flowers was due to growth inhibition by treated CHX rather than water balance. Benzyladenine or kinetin increased vase life by three days than control and improved quality of cut iris as represented by slow wilting.
